Although it’s cooling down, be adventurous and visit an interesting outdoor museum/park in Astoria. Queens, called Socrates Sculpture Park. I visited about a month ago on a sunny and warm day, but it would be just as nice in the cool fall sunshine. This park is interesting because it has both permanent and temporary exhibits. We saw some metal goat installations which may not be to everyone’s taste. But further along the main entrance, lies a living breathing artists’ studio, where we were lucky to witness beautiful human sculptures being created.
The green spots are a little patchy and wouldn’t be my ideal picnic spot, but it would be a great walking park. By the edge of the water, we saw several men, young and old with gardening chairs and fishing rods. The view of Manhattan was beautiful from where they were sitting. There are several ways to get to Socrates Sculpture Park, including a ferry which started service in August 2017. Why not visit on a sunny day? Astoria’s known for its vibrant high street and diverse eateries, so how about a ferry ride to Astoria, walk along the shore of Socrates Park, then satiate your appetite at one of Astoria’s fabulous restaurants. Would love to hear from you if you are planning to, or have already done this!
