All students on a budget in Switzerland shoot a knowing glance at each other when the word ‘Migros’ is mentioned. It has been 18 years since I was an exchange student in Switzerland and I don’t remember much, but the mouth-watering creamy-sweet-milkiness of Migros Budget Chocolate will be with me forever. I’m not surprised that Migros is still going strong. It’s a big grocery store with everything a student, especially one who needs to watch their pennies in a rich country, could need. I always recommend it to anyone making their way to Switzerland.
What I really used to love about Migros was its ‘Budget’ offerings, one of which was its distinctive green and white wrapped milk chocolate bars. With all the walking to and from Zurich Hauptbahnhof (Main Station) from the village I lived, and navigating small hills here and there, it was easy to justify a bar or two a week. At less than one Swiss Franc, it was very easy to justify. Migros Budget Chocolate really is creamier and yummier than a lot of high-end chocolate I’ve eaten. And the reason I’m speaking about its taste in the present tense? My darling parents who were visiting Switzerland a few months back brought me a back a mega bar of 400 grams! Almost a POUND! And tasting it brought back a plethora of pleasant memories, as if I’d gone back and was savoring a bar like I used to, after a mile-long hike in fresh white Swiss snow. A bite into it and the soft sweet milk chocolate melts into a gooey chocolate river, tempting you to finish the whole bar. Wunderbar!
So there you have it. I’m going to go back and enjoy a couple more pieces from my bar. If you visit Switzerland, get yourself some Migros Budget Chocolate. And let me know if you feel the same way.
