Remember when you wanted to get some special NYC gifts for folks back home, but all you could find were those corny, ubiquitous stores around Times Square selling cheap keychains, fridge magnets and Statue of Liberty replicas? With the holiday season right here, maybe there is still time for you to get your hands on some NYC originals. Look no further than Fishs Eddy for unique NYC items.
Honestly, I was just walking around in the Gramercy Park area before meeting friends to lunch at Junoon (read my post about that here), and came across this store on Broadway between 19th and 20th St. As soon as I walked in, I could tell this was the real deal. No ‘I Heart NYC’ merchandise in here- no siree!. In fact, Fishs Eddy specializes in serveware which epitomizes NYC. So for example, I found a section which had the NYC skyline on plates, bowls, mugs. Now you may be thinking “Hey, the stores on 42nd have that too, and they’re cheaper.” Well, the ones here are US-made (I’m guessing even NYC-made) and the quality is much, much, better. Don’t take my word for it. Visit Fishs Eddy yourself and find out.
My favorite section in Fishs Eddy was the ‘Brooklyn’ section, which offered serveware (coffee mugs, bowls, butter dishes etc) with Brooklyn-speak on them. Isn’t that a great authentic gift for those from out-of-town? I really loved that the butter dishes said ‘Buttah’ or that the mugs had ‘Cawffee’ printed on them. And there was more…(see image above).
Unfortunately, I cannot remember the prices of items, but they weren’t obscenely expensive. I say go to their website and do some research. Read their ‘Our History’ section and find out about where the name came from (I won’t spoil it for you). If you’re looking for unique gifts that will get people talking, visit Fishs Eddy and let me know what you think.
