Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers

I mentioned in my previous post that learning to ice skate was on my 2018 list. I have been taking lessons since January at the Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers on 23rd and 12th, and it’s been a love-hate relationship so far.

For someone who loves water wayyy more than ice, it’s been a journey (not on my skates unfortunately). I can at least stand on ice and shovel along round the rink, huffing and puffing. But I recognize it’s great exercise and I do feel some sense of accomplishment by moving away from my board-hugging days of the past.

Enough about me, Sky Rink is a great place to get lessons or just free skate. Check out Chelsea Pier’s Skating brochure here and learn about different opportunities at different levels. The setting of the rink is pretty too – I am looking forward to the day I can glide while appreciating the views of the Hudson from its large windows. Sky Rink is also a year-round rink, which is great for people like me who want to practice consistently and don’t want the weather to get in the way.

Speaking of skating and learning, I also found this amazing series of ice skating videos (you’ll find the rest on Youtube) by Jono Partridge, an English ice skater on his channel ‘Ice Coach’ online. He does a brilliant job of breaking it down and is upbeat and encouraging. Here’s one of his videos. If you’re a newbie like me, or skated when you were a kid and want to give it a go again – check these out.]
